The donation networks
In Switzerland, six donation networks support the organ donation tasks of hospitals on the local level. This includes identifying potential donors. These tasks also encompass providing care for families and next of kin and running a 24-hour hotline. Services provided are recorded, the data is checked and quality controls are carried out. An essential part of these networks is also education and further training of specialist medical personnel. The network heads ensure a sensible division of duties between hospital centres and those in peripheral areas. They are likewise responsible for the optimum use of resources. In the two biggest networks, the Donor Care Association (DCA) and the Programme Latin de Don d’Organes (PLDO), network heads receive professional support from network coordinators.
