20th World Transplant Games in Argentina
The 20th World Transplant Games were held from 23 to 30 August 2015 in Mar del Plata on the coast of Argentina. Every two years, more than 2,000 athletes from around 70 countries take part in the largest international sporting event for transplant recipients, where they compete in 14 disciplines including track and field, swimming, cycling, table tennis, volleyball and pétanque. The event is intended to increase general awareness of the importance and benefits of organ donation and transplants. For participants, the games are an opportunity to say thank you to the donors, the participants’ own families as well as medical professionals and caregivers. A team representing Switzerland took part in Argentina. Swisstransplant accompanied the SWISS TEAM to Argentina as their main sponsor and provided support for the athletes on the SWISS TEAM in the form of a financial contribution of CHF 1,000 as well as a sporty team uniform.
