The 21st World Transplant Games took place in Málaga, Spain, from 25 June to 2 July 2017. Every two years, more than 2,000 participants from over 50 countries gather to compete at the World Transplant Games, the largest international sporting event for transplant recipients. They compete in disciplines including track and field, swimming, cycling, table tennis, volleyball and pétanque. The event is intended to increase general awareness of the importance and benefits of organ donation and transplants. For participants, the games are an opportunity to say thank you to the donors, the participants’ own families as well as medical professionals and caregivers. A team represented Switzerland in Spain this year, and Swisstransplant accompanied the SWISS TEAM to Málaga.
